For the love of the game and life

John always loved his family – his parents, his sister Nancy, his brothers Les and Sid, his cousins and all his relations’ families as well as his adored wife Ambrosine and his four sons, Roger, Ken, Nigel and Geoff. John brought up his sons to love football and cricket, spending long days playing football in the park and cricket on the beach. In 1966, he took them all on holiday in a caravan with a rented television – the boys were disappointed the following year to realise that the World Cup wasn’t on telly every time they went on holiday! As the boys got older, John would accompany them to matches to support them playing or refereeing. The bedrock of John’s life was always his love for his wife Ambrosine. He loved and nurtured her all his life. With work and family, you would think that John had no time for anything else, but when John moved down south he found a serious lack – there was no schoolboys’ football league. He set about remedying that and organised a league that grew to 600 boys. John remained the League Secretary for many years. John was close to both his sister and his brothers. Many happy holidays were spent visiting or being visited by family. Up until he died, John still asked about his mother and his siblings. He would forget that they’d died and would be bitterly upset if reminded. John was a witty man, he always had a quick comeback or a tale to tell. After Nigel died, John and Ambrosine moved away from Bath to Weston-Super-Mare. John would walk for miles every day. In 1998, they moved to Scarborough, a place John loved and where he had taken Ambrosine on honeymoon. John found the view from the cliffs of the town and the sea breathtaking. Once again John would walk for miles, although Scarborough was much hillier than Weston-Super-Mare. As the years passed John became prone to sudden collapses and had to cut-back on his walks.
