John spent the last four years of his 85 year life in care. He suffered from vascular dementia. As the de mentia took hold, he remembered fewer things from recent years but never forgot his darling Ambrosine. As his dementia took hold his core personality shone through – gentle, caring, ready to stand up for anyone, protective, sunny natured, funny, with a love of singing and dancing. He so often used his walking stick as a twirling cane and he often broke out into song, on an evening Silent Night was a particular favourite. John was loved – by his wife, by his sons, by his sister and brothers, by people who knew him and the people who cared for him so well and so kindly is the last years of his life. He gave love and he received it. John’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to the people who looked after John so well. They treated John with love and respect.   John loved football, particularly Newcastle United, which he supported all his life. He didn’t like the current ‘Maccem hating’ culture – when John was young he’d watch a Newcastle United home game one Saturday and a Sunderland home game the next. And of course he supported England.
